Overlooking Santander Park in Madrid, Apartment ML7 presented a unique architectural challenge: transforming a highly segmented, dark, and linear 40-square-meter studio into an efficient, light-filled contemporary sanctuary. The original layout, typical of historic urban blocks, suffered from a restrictive single-aspect orientation, oversized utility zones, and a long, disconnected corridor that amplified a sense of claustrophobia while blocking natural light from reaching the interior.

Our spatial strategy focused on total volumetric reassessment, eliminating unnecessary partitions to establish a continuous, fluid axis of circulation. To maximize the usable floor area and optimize natural light, the social spaces were merged into an open-plan kitchen and living area directly connected to the south-facing terrace. By shifting the bathroom to the deepest, most irregular corner of the layout, we successfully reclaimed the prime zones for daily living and social interaction.

The private zone was conceived as a elevated, semi-open bedroom suite. Raising the bedroom floor by 15 centimeters not only resolved complex plumbing infrastructure but also defined a distinct architectural boundary without enclosing the space. To enhance illumination, we integrated a frosted glass internal window and custom floor-to-ceiling mirrored wardrobes, which capture and continuously bounce natural light throughout the entire volume.

The final execution of Apartment ML7 demonstrates how thoughtful, identity-driven design can convert spatial limitations into architectural virtues. By dissolving traditional boundaries and prioritizing material honesty, the home achieves a sense of scale and visual freedom that far exceeds its physical footprint, offering a serene urban refuge tailored for contemporary life.
